| Cupcake as a baby... |
A LOT goes into getting one of these bundles of joy....
These dogs may seem expensive to you, and you may be wondering why....Here's my story, of what I had to do...just to get a litter of puppies..
First I had to buy the parents
I buy all my breeding and showing stock as puppies, because I LOVE puppies, plus, I have children, and I want my pets to grow with our family, so I have invested years into the dogs, before ever selling a puppy.
Then there are the check-ups
You can't just breed any dog, you have to make sure the parents are clear of any health problems, and have a good temperament...I have been so lucky that all of my dogs have grown up to be very healthy..otherwise they would be spade, and not used for breeding.
After my female's second heat, she is usually ready to breed, depending on age...
So once the female is old enough...you would probably think that nature would take it's course, right?? Well, with english bulldogs, it's not that easy... 95% of the time bulldogs cannot breed on their own.... this means there are numerous trips to the vet for progesterone tests, to see if the female is really ready, and then, there's more trips to the vet for the artificial insemination, which takes about a week to accomplish.
Once the female is pregnant...
We have to be very alert, if she should happen to start labor early, it could have dire consequences...English bulldogs 95% of the time, cannot deliver puppies on their own, that means the vet will have to x-ray the pregnant mom, to determine an approximate due date...he will then schedule a c-section, to deliver the pups...
Once mama and babies get home....
Mama is usually very groggy from her c-section...and needs to be watched closely with her babies, to make sure she doesn't accidentally lay on her babies...But that only lasts a short time, once she starts waking up, she starts right to work on taking care of her babies....
Puppies get picked and named right away
Usually one look is all it takes, and the new owner picks the puppy they want, all the pups are usually sold in advance, and the new moms and dads can get pictures of their pups every week to see how they are coming along...If mom and dad live close, they can come visit their baby in person! While the babies are still with us, they get a whole lot of attention, they play, and as long as the new parents have decided on a name, we will start calling the baby by it's name, right away...
Then the puppies are ready for their new homes!
Puppies can either be picked up(at 6-7 weeks) or shipped(at 9 weeks) as long as it's not too hot to fly...and even after you take your baby home, we're still here, to help out with any questions that you may have about your new puppy
Before baby comes home....
You will need to find a good vet, one that is very familiar with the bulldog breed, they have special needs because of the smooshed faces and wrinkles, and you will need to get your house "baby ready" by making sure that all hazardous materials are out of baby's reach...Bullies are very curious, and will certainly taste test anything they come across.... You should also get your baby a crate to sleep in...he or she will come to love their crate, it will be their bed, and quiet spot they can go to when they get sleepy... and believe me, bullies LOVE to get their sleep! Make sure to put a comfortable pad or soft blanket on the bottom for him to curl up on... Also, you will need to pick up some premium puppy food, we are now recommending, "Eukanuba puppy food" , some will come with your puppy, if you want to change his food, just make sure to do so gradually...
